Kenya's coastal culture is shaped by centuries of Arab, Persian and Indian Ocean trade. The narrow streets of Mombasa's Old Town, the carved wooden doors, the call to prayer drifting over a dhow harbour at dawn. This is not a beach that was discovered last season. It has been a crossroads of the world for a very long time.
The sea itself is warm and calm most of the year, sheltered by the fringing reef. Beyond the reef, the ocean floor drops away quickly, bringing pelagic fish, dolphins and whale sharks in season. Onshore, the cuisine follows the same trade routes: coconut, tamarind, slow-cooked seafood and freshly baked chapati.

Culture and history
Mombasa Old Town is a UNESCO-listed historic settlement with Fort Jesus, carved Swahili doorways and a working harbour that has traded since the 9th century.

Dhows and the ocean
The dhow is the original vessel of the Indian Ocean trade winds. A sunset cruise or a full-day island sail is a completely different experience from a motorised boat.

Best season
The coast is warm year-round. The two dry seasons offer the best beach and water conditions, with sea temperatures around 26 to 29 degrees Celsius.
- Dec to Mar: warm, dry, calm seas

- Apr to Jun: long rains, fewer visitors, bargain rates
